The first Butterfield bakery was conceptualised and opened in November 1996 in the centre of Pretoria. It was only in July 1997, after this bakery proved to be successfull that the founding members Johan Stapelberg and Kobus Oosthuizen decided to franchise the concept.

Since its inception, Butterfield has concentrated its primary business focus on supplying bread and other baked products to meet the staple food needs of the mass consumer market. The niche that largely contributed to the Butterfield concept being different from other traditional sources of supply was the fact that hot bread was served from the oven to the customer.

Since 1997 Butterfield has grown from ground zero to more than a 100 stores. Measured in terms of the investment that this represents in such a short space of time, this is an achievement that is probably unmatched among South African franchise companies. Butterfield Support Centre is until today still managed and largely owned by its initiators which indicates the dedication and belief of its founders in this South African home grown concept.
